Leopold Sher

A native New Orleanian, Leopold Sher is a child of Holocaust survivors, Rachel and Joseph Sher. Unlike many Holocaust survivors who emigrated to the United States through Ellis Island in New York, Leopold’s parents and his older brother, Martin (who was born in a displaced persons camp in Germany), sailed directly to New Orleans from Germany. In New Orleans, Joseph Sher continued his trade as a master “old world” tailor, making clothes for many, including local celebrities like Fats Domino, Al Hirt, Chubby Checker, Chris Owens, and even national stars like Elvis Presley. All the Shers spent much of their leisure time with the families of other Holocaust survivors who settled in New Orleans, most of whom partied and celebrated together and considered each other members of the larger family of Holocaust survivors in New Orleans. Leopold, and his loving wife of 40 years, Karen Sher, and their two daughters Rose and Samantha have frequently watched Leopold’s dad tell his Holocaust experiences to students of all ages throughout southeast Louisiana.  Leopold is a practicing attorney with the law firm of Sher Garner Cahill Richter Klein and Hilbert.
